Who We Are
Te Rōpū Niho Ora is a collective of Māori oral health leaders, providers, and advocates working together to improve hauora and oral health equity across Aotearoa. We support kaupapa Māori approaches, strengthen the Māori oral health workforce, and champion equitable access to oral health services for all whānau.
Our rōpū brings together a wealth of experience from across the motu, including:
-
Provider Representatives: Clinical and non-clinical kaimahi from Māori Oral Health Providers.
-
Sector Experts: Māori oral health specialists who provide support and guidance to the sector.

Our Story
In the mid-2000s, Te Kete Hauora supported Māori Health Providers to establish and strengthen oral health services. During this time, providers identified that - despite working to a shared kaupapa - they had limited opportunities to connect and collaborate across the sector.
To support this need, the Quality Improvement Group for the Māori Oral Health Provider sector was established. This work later led to the formation of a Charitable Trust in 2023, now known as Te Rōpū Niho Ora, reflecting the importance of tikanga Māori in our mahi.

Our History
Established in the mid-2000s, our rōpū began as a sector-led group focused on strengthening Māori Oral Health Providers. This work led to our formal transition into a Charitable Trust in 2023, reflecting our role as the peak body for the sector.

Our Vision
A sustainable Māori oral health provider sector delivering equitable, publicly funded services that support whānau-centred preventive care.
Our vision is for orally fit whānau and for equity in oral health outcomes for Māori.

Our Purpose
Our purpose is to advance Māori oral health equity by identifying sector priorities, leading collaborative projects, and providing expert advice to health organisations and partners. We focus on enabling equitable, sustainable oral health services that lead to improved hauora outcomes for all Māori.
